About Us

Great Feathers fly shop was established in 1993 and located in northern Baltimore County, Maryland Our brick and mortar store is located right next to the Gunpowder River State Park. Great Feathers is run and staffed by fly fisherman with an appreciation for the sport and its tradition. Our passion for fly fishing and fly tying is well represented in the products that we carry. With a strong emphasis on fly tying, we are proud to carry the finest materials available, many that are difficult to find, and a selection that is unrivaled.

We are committed to providing our customers with the best fly fishing feathers, materials, products and service while sharing our obsession. While staying current with the latest trends and products, we sell only the products that we believe in and use. While the sport has not changed for centuries, the tools of the trade have. In keeping with tradition, we proudly represent Hardy and Orvis, two companies synonymous with fly fishing and quality. They are two of the oldest companies in the industry yet both continue to lead in innovation. Both companies provide premium products with an emphasis on performance and affordability. Whether it is the rods, reels, lines, tackle or gear, all of your fly fishing needs can be met.

Fly tying is where we excel. Our selection of hooks, materials, tools and accessories is one of the most extensive. One of our specialties is with North Country spiders and soft-hackled flies. Some of these patterns have remained unchanged for centuries yet

still are as effective as ever. Traditional patterns are tied with materials that are specific and more difficult to obtain. We are fortunate to represent several companies from England, Veniard and Cookshill, which carry many product that are impossible to find, like Coot, Moorhen, snipe and premium grouse and partridge.

We welcome all fly fisherman of all abilities to come in to our classic fly shop. Great Feathers continues to embrace the essence of our sport and the traditions that have lasted the years. Beginners as well as the advanced will appreciate the knowledge base that we can impart. We will always give you the best service and advice regarding your fly fishing or fly tying needs.

Our Staff

Mike Watriss

Mike was born on the banks of Western Run and has been fishing the many wild trout streams around here for over 30 years. An accomplished and award winning decoy carver, Mike’s passions include art, fly fishing, and drumming. In his 21st year at this location Mike has the same passion for the sport and serving customers with the best equipment and materials as the day he opened

Austin Green

Austin Green is a Maryland resident that toggles the balance between being a photographer/filmmaker and a fly fisherman with a heavy bias towards streamer fishing. He calls Baltimore County trout streams his home waters, particularly the Gunpowder River, where he has been fly fishing religiously since 2005, and guiding since 2015. He thoroughly enjoys branching out to the Potomac River and its many tributaries, making him a well rounded angler and guide in our region. He spends his summers guiding in Alaska with NakNek River Camp in Katmai National Park.

Jeff Brennan

Jeff has been fishing our local waters since he was 11 years old. For 25+ years he has been slamming trout and taking names. After attending Sweetwater Guide School in Montana in 2011, Jeff has been guiding happy clients ever since. But who cares about credentials when we know your eyes are actually focused on that sweet, sweet beard?

Josef Budniakiewicz

Our webmaster, e-commerce manager and general IT expert Josef has been working with all kinds of computer technology since he was a toddler. Being taught solely by his family, his own “tinkering” and a plethora of time on Google, he seems to have a solution for every technological issue we have. Whether it is inventory management, online customer care, or keeping our computer technology up to date – Josef is always keeping busy in the shop. What he lacks in extended knowledge of fly fishing, he makes up for in oiling the machine that is our online business.

Millie & Max

Every fly shop needs a shop dog - and we have two! Millie will "let us know" (see: barking loudly) when you're here, and Max will drop a ball at your feet waiting to play. They're really the glue that keeps this place together.
